We will live in the village taking part in village ceremonies and rituals while also hosting visiting artists and master teachers who will be in residence teaching us during our village stay. I withhold the right of refusal to anyone who I feel will not be respectful or able to act in a kind manner towards our hosts who will be opening their homes and lives to us in complete trust. His passion for the instrument and the culture that created it led him to live amongst the Shona tribe of Zimbabwe\, where he was bestowed with the title Gwenyambira meaning ‘one whose music calls the spirits.’ \nIn subsequent years his journey expanded from music-making into mediumship\, under the guidance of Shona wisdom keepers and spirit mediums. He then embarked upon a journey to share the great potential of musical creation with communities worldwide\, using story-telling\, melodic instrumentalism\, song\, drumming and movement to activate a phenomenon known as N’jinji (literally a channel that opens between the physical and spirit realms). This is the high-vibrational sensation that musicians sense when everything is ‘in the pocket\,’ and when time and space seem to lose their hold. The state of mind this invokes creates the ultimate condition for healing and ancestral communion. \nFor more information about Chris Berry’s Bana Kuma\, please visit www.chrisberrymusic.org.

SUMMARY:Flow Fest 2019
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the 5th annual Flow Festival in Puna on the Big Island of Hawaii! \nFlow Festival is Puna\, Hawaii’s premiere music\, cultural and sustainability festival. \nThe festival was originally inspired in 2014 when the Big Island’s active lava flow changed directions and threatened to cut off lower Puna from the rest of the island. \nThe intention remains to enhance the sustainability and unity of our community and warmly welcomes all ages\, shapes\, sizes\, creeds\, colors… \nWe focus on conscious music\, progressive thinking speakers\, sustainable & holistic life practices and equality among the human race. \nWe honor Hawaii for its richness in culture and geography. We dedicate the festival to the Hawaiian Lava Goddess\, Pele. \nNOTE: Our original intention was to honor Pele and we intend to continue honoring Pele in the best way we know how. We do not take the lava flow personally nor are we arrogant enough to believe the lava flow was prompted by us – we understand that volcanic activity has been forming land on this planet since its beginning and that we as humans have no control over when and where it will do so. We recognize that Pele has challenged many of us in uncomfortable ways. But more than all of that celebrate the ways that as individuals and as community community we have risen to those challenges to discover more depth of self and surroundings; we celebrate the power of nature and respect ourselves as simply one part of it.

SUMMARY:Bana Kuma Spirit Expansion
DESCRIPTION:You are warmly invited to embark on a journey of exploration and personal expansion with the international Bana Kuma family. This is sure to be a wild and wonderful experience that invites each willing soul to delve into their ancestral connections and to explore what a balanced and reciprocal relationship with the natural world feels like. Our hope is to provide an environment that is conducive for each individual to practice listening to their greater self as their most effective and important guide. This experience is for those who desire to learn more about self guidance and listening as opposed to following other paths generated outside of themselves. Each participant is invited to be led by their sacred gift of free choice in order to know to their fullest potential\, the sacredness of themselves and the holy journey they are on\, and to realise the immensity of what they are here to offer the world and each other. \nBana Kuma is a phrase that translates as ‘sacred altering\,’ referring to the process whereby our thoughts are intentionally transformed into our reality. This phrase is part of a broad and deep language that is being recovered (along with the wisdom it offers us) by those who are on the journey towards realising their most authentic being. Chris Berry\, in communion with his ancestral guides\, will be hosting this event with the intention to co-create the next level of progress available to humanity through this endless source of universal wisdom. Chris is a wonderful exemplar of Bana Kuma\, as well as a cultivated spirit medium whose availability to his ancestors is expressed in special ceremonies reminiscent of the traditions still thriving in much of Africa. These ceremonies will be play an important role in our experience together\, and in many ways define the layout of how we spend our days. \nYou are invited to camp with us and encouraged to remain within the container we create for the duration of our time together. A simple organic\, locally sourced meal plan will be provided that will be largely plant based but may include animal protein sustainably sourced from the land and prepared in a ceremonial way. We respectfully recognize that this gathering will be held on land traditionally stewarded by the ancestors of its Hawaiian custodians. \nThis unique communal experience is based on a premise of self-sovereignty\, co-creation\, and unity. You will be held by a close circle of co-facilitators convening from around the world who will model their own journey with ceremony and self-discovery. Practices undertaken throughout the event will be based on natural lore and on communion with the elements of Air\, Fire\, Water and Earth. These may include (but are not limited to): \nSpirit Mediumship Ceremonies and Councils:\nThese will be held by Chris and select few other initiated mediums for the purpose of opening direct dialogues with the spirit realms. \nKasha Ceremony:\nThis powerful ceremony intends to activate the transformative abilities of our own central fire (our hearts). It involves the ignition of a physical fire through a process of offerings and prayer and a high-energy expression of spirit and release through fast drumming and dancing. \nShiniwa Ceremony:\nThis ceremony involves working with the ferocity and tenderness of water to cleanse the mind and body of harmful attachments and to reactivate stagnant energy. It involves a process of offering and prayer\, and complete immersion in one of Hawaii’s beautiful waterfalls. This ceremony is often followed by meditation practices and may involve a still-water consecration. \nTililee Ceremony:\nThis is an ancient way of gathering herbs from one’s local environment for the purpose of preparing medicinal teas and salves. It involves a process of offering and prayer\, and of deeply listening to the plants to discern which is most appropriate and for what particular medicinal outcome. This is accompanied by.a tea making ceremony performed over an open fire and in allegiance with the spirit of all the elements. \nThe following costs do include a meal plan and camping but do not include transportation or additional accommodations:\nKama’aina/Early Bird (Until Dec. 15):$675\nAfter Dec. 15: $750 \nFor registration please contact Minja at minjasmagicks@gmail.com

SUMMARY:Weekly Drum Class
DESCRIPTION:Chris Berry will be substituting for Neil Landau’s weekly African Drum class at Maple Street Dance Space in Nob Hill\, Albuquerque\, New Mexico. \nDuring this 90 min class\, Chris will expertly guide you to a deeper understanding of African and African-Inspired Rhythms. \nChris Berry is happy to accommodate all levels. \nPlease bring your own instrument. \nA bit about Chris: The title ‘Gwenyambira’ – a Shona term translated to ‘one whose music calls the spirits’ – was bestowed upon Chris Berry when he was living in Zimbabwe. Advised by Zimbabwean spirit mediums\, Chris has embarked upon an international journey to share the great healing potential of musical creation with communities worldwide. Chris uses story-telling\, melodic instrumentalism\, song\, drumming and movement to activate a phenomenon known as ‘N’jinji’ (translated to ‘a channel that opens between the physical and spirit realms’). N’jinji is the high-vibrational sensation that musicians sense when everything is ‘in the pocket\,’ and when time and space seem to lose their hold. The state of mind this invokes creates the ultimate condition for healing and ancestral communion. \n“Chris Berry is not only an amazing teacher\, but also a hugely funny and endearing man. Every drum camp I’ve attended of his has been pure joy\, and greatly inspirational. I leave feeling like a new person.” \n“Chris is an incredibly talented\, passionate and sincere guide\, who also knows how to have plenty of fun. Magic happens here.”
